As the largest owner and operator of towers in Indonesia, the Company are committed to making a positive impact to our society, environment, and other stakeholders. One major way the Company can have a positive impact is through our corporate social responsibilities (CSR) activities. Our CSR efforts focus on contributions in three main areas: 1) Education 2) Humanitarian and Disaster Relief, and 3) Nature Conservation. In addition, the Company is also encouraging the involvement of our employees in social and charitable activities by having a CSR competition program between functional groups.
On education area, the Company provides scholarships to senior high school students and university students throughout Indonesia since tuition increases substantially in Indonesia between junior and senior high school, the number of students continuing to senior vocational or high school drops considerably. The Company wants to encourage Indonesian teenagers to stay in school. As a result, from 2014 to 2017, the Company has provided more than 1,100 three-year scholarships to students from 92 schools in 33 cities. In 2018, 340 new students from 17 schools in 9 cities began receiving scholarships. As a developing country, Indonesia needs strong engineering talent. To help develop this talent, the Company has given more than 150 scholarships to engineering students through 2018. As part of our university scholarship program, the Company is implementing an internship program to give some of these students practical experience. Students from the following universities have benefited from these scholarships: Universitas Indonesia, Akademi Telkom Jakarta, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember in Surabaya, Universitas Telkom in Bandung, Universitas Malikussaleh in Aceh, Universitas Khairun in Maluku, Universitas Kristen Indonesia (UKI) in Toraja, Universitas Sains & Teknologi Jayapura in Papua, Universitas Musamus in Merauke, Universitas Victory in Sorong, Universitas Halu Oleo in Kendari, and Universitas Flores. In addition, the Company offers support for training programs for high school teachers in an effort to improve teaching quality.
Humanitarian and Disaster Relief
“Protelindo Berbagi” is a program to support communities hit by disasters. The Company directly contributes to both government and civil groups in areas affected by natural disasters such as floods, volcano eruptions, landslides, earthquakes and tsunamis. The Company also provides infrastructure development assistance in affected areas such as clean water facilities. In 2018, the Company contributed to people affected by the earthquake in Lombok and by the earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi Tengah (Sigi, Palu dan Donggala) by distributing supplies directly to the affected areas. Donations were also given directly to people affected by tsunami in Banten and Lampung Selatan. The Company also regularly conducts blood donation drives with the employees in collaboration with the Indonesia Red Cross (PMI).
Nature conservation is also one of our CSR Programs. Since 2015, the Company regularly supports The Pro Natura Foundation that focuses on protecting the watershed around Balikpapan, Kalimantan and providing on-going assistance towards various animal and education programs at its Sun Bear Education Center near Balikpapan.
Every year, the Company conducts a CSR Competition program to encourage the involvement of the employees in social and charitable activities. Each competition, consists of 12 teams from different functional departments with activities held every month throughout the year. The themes of this CSR Competition are education, health, self-sufficiency and sanitation. Some of activities conducted have included:
• Refurbishing a public toilet and washing facility for a neighbourhood of 400 people with no other access to such facilities;
• Building an IT system and applications for Yayasan Kasih Anak Kanker Indonesia, a foundation that focus helping children suffering from cancer in Indonesia;
• Renovating libraries in both primary and secondary schools;
• Refurbishing learning facilities in an early learning education center(PAUD);
• Providing materials and training for neighborhood to begin a catfish farm.
